If you're interested in guns and survival gear, there's no better time of year than January. That's because this month marks the arrival of SHOT Show 2019, also known as the Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show. SHOT is the world's biggest show of its kind, and as a result it serves as the perfect venue for companies to unveil their newest products. It's no coincidence that you'll see a sudden flurry of articles and social media posts about exciting new guns (and some weird ones) across the internet this week.

For those of us on the RECOIL OFFGRID staff, SHOT Show means spending a full week in Las Vegas checking out guns and gear, conversing with PR people, and taking as many photos as we can. We usually end up tracking more than 5 miles walked each day on the show floor bouncing from booth to booth, but we're certainly not complaining. It's an awesome show, and since it's not open to the public, we have a rare opportunity to cover it.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, January 22nd) is the first day of SHOT Show 2019, and it continues through Friday the 25th. We'll be there from open to close every day, and will be posting photos and video clips to our various social media channels. This live coverage from #SHOTShow2019 will be compiled into the gallery below as we post it, and updated automatically every few minutes. So, be sure to check back throughout the week to see the latest. We’re at the @protector_nation Protector Symposium 5.0 in Tucson, AZ this weekend training with a variety of expert instructors.

Our morning session was with @edsmanifesto_ running edged weapon drills. Students grappled to control foam “knives” and realized how challenging it gets when their opponent is resisting. It should be noted that the student in the MultiCam shirt has a training gun in his waistband the whole time, but was unable to access it. Maybe there’s something to be said for bringing a knife to a gunfight after all?

Stay tuned all weekend for more from #protectorsymposium!

Apple recently announced some new capabilities that enable the iPhone 14 to serve as a distress beacon, even when there isn't cell signal or WiFi. These include automatic car crash detection and satellite SOS.

Much like OnStar and other onboard units in vehicles, Apple's new crash detection system is designed to detect a collision and place a call to 9-1-1 or emergency services unless the user cancels the call. This is intended to help those who might be unconscious or unable to reach a phone.

Shooting and gunfighting aren’t the same thing. Shooting and gunfighting aren’t the same thing. You may be able to nail the bull’s-eye every time at an indoor range or competition stage, and that’s a good sign that your fundamentals are solid. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re prepared for the enormous physiological, mental, and environmental challenges of a real-world defensive situation. Ideally, you should spend time honing both your technical shooting skills and your defensive gunfighting skills. OFFGRID Staff @pmccarthy10 recently attended back-to-back Fieldcraft Survival Gunfighter Pistol and Gunfighter Carbine classes with instructor @hunter_constantine that addressed both of these important elements.
