The handy SolarMonkey has a clamshell design with two solar panels and an integrated battery. With no direct connection to the solar cells, we weren't able to test its output, but the manufacturer rates it at 3 watts. The battery is modest at 3,500 mAh, but charged an iPad with a full 2 amps and 10 watts of power. Not as economical as other options, but the build quality is very high — it features a nice rubberized casing on the charger, a water- and shock-resistant design, a rubber cover on the connector jacks, multicolor status LED, and a slick padded carrying case with zippered opening. One niggle we had with the design: We'd have preferred a fold-flat hinge. Includes a carabiner and 3-foot USB cable.
