When it comes to tactical gear, we've noticed that it's often like Henry Ford once said of his Model T: “you can have any color you want, as long as it's black“. Well, actually, that's not always true. You can usually find tactical gear in various shades of coyote tan, olive drab, and dark grey. These subdued colors make sense for military and law enforcement applications, where stealth may be necessary for survival.
However, every-day carry gear is a different story entirely. Much like you wouldn't go about your daily routine in camouflage fatigues, you shouldn't feel forced to buy EDC gear in plain black, grey, brown, or green. It's OK to carry gear that has a little added style, as long as the functionality won't be hindered in case of a SHTF situation.
We mention this because Olight has recently released two new flashlight models in a unique material: solid copper. It's a far cry from the standard black finish on most flashlights, and we find that rather refreshing, since good EDC gear is always about a blend of function and form. Some people will like this look, and others may not—but at least it's something different.
The first of these new copper EDC flashlights is the Olight I3E-CU EOS, which is ideal for carrying on a keychain or lanyard. It uses a single AAA battery, and produces 120 lumens through a high-performance Philips LUXEON TX LED and PMMA TIR lens. This configuration gives the small light a maximum range of 48 meters.
The next new addition to Olight's lineup is the S2-CU Baton. This light is larger than the I3E, and is better-suited for pocket carry using the removable steel clip. It runs on a single 18650 battery or two CR123A lithium batteries, and produces a maximum of 950 lumens through its Cree XM-L2 LED. It also features a PMMA TIR lens for even beam distribution and a cool white light color. Like other models in the Olight S-series, it includes a low-profile side switch, magnetic tail cap, and timer function.
The S2-CU Baton is available at an MSRP of $75, while the smaller I3E-CU EOS is available at an MSRP of $20.
