NOTES
Make no mistake, once your feet start to hurt, they’re all you’re going to think about. At that point, you’re not focused, you’re not moving well, and your mind is effectively out of the fight. Taking care of your feet is foundational. One way to do that is by going back to a more natural approach, and that’s where Jim Green’s Barefoot Rangers come into play.
The wide toe box is the first thing you notice. Walking is a process: heel strikes first, the foot rolls forward, and weight transfers from the outside edge toward the big toe. As that happens, your toes naturally want to spread. Most modern footwear doesn’t allow for that. Instead, it compresses the foot, leading to hot spots, blisters, and over time, more serious issues like ingrown nails and infection.
The Barefoot Rangers give your feet the room they’re supposed to have. There’s space for your toes to move, improved airflow, and enough room to run thicker socks when conditions call for it. That kind of freedom matters when you’re putting in miles. These aren’t insulated boots, and they’re not meant for deep winter use. But outside of that, they’ve proven themselves.
I’ve worn them for the better part of 18 months across Michigan woods, Nebraska prairie, range days, training classes, and even a couple jumps from 15,000 feet. They’ve held up without complaints. The construction is straightforward. Vegetable-tanned leather. No liner. No padding. No built-in arch support. Just a tough, flexible sole that lets you feel the ground beneath you. That connection to the terrain trains your feet to work the way they’re supposed to.
In a situation where every step matters and every mile counts, you need to take care of what is carrying you. Modern footwear has done a lot to make things comfortable, but it’s also created weaknesses. The Jim Green Barefoot Rangers go in the other direction.
