Potable Aqua’s PURE electrolytic water purifier is a device unlike any other we tested. Essentially, this innovative little gadget uses electrolysis to convert table salt (sodium chloride) into a disinfectant solution of chlorine and peroxide. This powerful disinfectant can be mixed with up to 20 liters of water at once and inactivates bacteria, protozoan cysts, and even viruses. Unfortunately, like other water treatment tablets and drops, you’ll need to wait a minimum of 30 minutes before drinking your water (or over four hours to kill certain protozoan cysts). Also, we noticed a substantial chlorine taste and odor present in our water after treatment. The PURE device does have a long lifespan, thanks to a rechargeable battery and built-in solar charger, and requires no consumable materials other than ordinary salt. As long as you’ve got a little patience, the PURE system serves as a compact way to purify large quantities of water.

Pros:

  • Only needs table salt — no replacement parts, filters, or batteries necessary.
  • Long lifespan thanks to a built-in solar charger.

Cons:

  • Requires waiting as long as four hours to treat protozoa
  • Produces lingering chlorinated taste and odor in water
